Fasting Before Surgery
It is important that you do not eat or drink as instructed by your doctor. This is usually 6 to 8 hours before any surgical operation.
If you feel in any way unsure about this please do not hesitate to contact the hospital for advice.
This requirement is very important as any food or drink remaining in your stomach prior to an operation can cause serious danger for you if there is vomiting under anaesthesia. Parents please be very careful with young children.
On the day of surgery
- Wear comfortable unrestrictive clothing
- Remove all nail polish and make up
- Shower or bath the morning of your operation
- Remove all jewellery except your wedding ring
What to bring
- Sleepwear; dressing gown and slippers
- Personal toilet articles
- Favourite toy or cuddly for children
- Your Hospital/Medical Benefits Fund card
- Any pharmacy entitlement cards for prescriptions
- Recent test results (within the last six months)
- Medicare card
- All of your medications that you are currently taking (in their original packaging)
- Please do not bring valuables or jewellery
- A small amount of cash for incidentals only.
Allocation of Accommodation in the Hospital.
Every endeavour will be made to provide you with the type of accommodation that you select. Sometimes it is not possible to allocate private rooms at the time of admission but we will transfer you as soon as possible to your requested accommodation.
It is sometimes essential for you to be treated in the “High Dependency Unit”. If your medical condition requires this. The High Dependency Unity is equipped with special monitoring devices and, by design, is located close to the main nursing station. This unit is designed to add to your safety and to ensure a rapid recovery after major surgery.
The ward areas are under the supervision of the Nurse Unit Manager during week days, and there is a Registered Nurse in Charge on evenings, night and week end shifts. The Director Hospital/Nursing is available to speak with you should you require.
Same Day Patients / Day Surgery Unit
With advances in technology an increasing numbers of procedures can be performed and the patient discharged home on the same day, without admission to the main wards in the hospital.
The hospital will never compromise medical care and there will be no hesitiation to admit you to the main ward of the hospital if this is in the best interest of your medical treatment.
Discharge times from the Day Surgery Unit depends on the type of procedure/operation that has been performed. Generally this is about two hours after your return from the operating theatre.
You will be nursed after your operation initially on an operating theatre trolley in the main recovery area of the hospital’s operating theatres. Later on, when you are more fully awake from your operation, you will be placed on a recliner lounge until you have recovered sufficiently, to be allowed to leave the hospital.
Some patient’s friends and relatives would like to stay with you at all times, but for general safety and infection control this is not possible and we seek your understand in this regard. Make sure that your friends and relatives understand the importance of this and that they will be kept informed of your progress.
Your doctor will give you instructions regarding fasting (no food or fluid) requirements. This information will be given to your prior to admission. All patients who undergo a day procedure will require transport home and adult supervision overnight.
We strongly advise that in the first 24 hours after your anaesthetic you MUST NOT
- Drive a car
- Operate machinery
- Conduct business or sign documents
Paediatric Patients (Children)
Children are welcome in our hospital as patients and every effort is made to reduce their fears and make their stay as happy as possible. Children admitted to hospital may bring their favorite toy or books. If your child requires nappies, please bring a supply for use during your child’s admission.
Parents are encouraged to stay with their child during their admission, and if an overnight stay is necessary, a stretcher bed is available. You may accompany your child into theatre if needs, and can be with them as they recover from their anaesthetic in the Recovery Room.
Parent partnership in your child’s care is valued and encouraged, as we know that this will aid in more positive experience for all.
Nurse Call System - A nurse can be contacted by pressing the nurse call button / buzzer. Your nurse will show you how to operate the nurse call system on admission.
Lights - Your room light switches can be operated from the hand set control or from the console and / or wall switches.
Telephones - There is a phone beside your bed. This is a dedicated line for you to use. You can dial straight out after dialing zero (0) – local calls only.
Phone cards for calling STD and mobile phones can be purchased at Admissions.
Patients may be telephoned on their direct line which is displayed near each phone, or dial the hospital number (02) 9797 0555.
Television Services - A ceiling-mounted television is provided at each bed. The television is operated by a hand-held console at your bedside. Regular television channels can be viewed at each bed, free of charge.
Hot Water in the Shower – Temperature Control - For your safety and as mandated by health department regulation, there are mixing values which allow a maximum temperature of 43.5 degrees Celsius, except in the high dependency bathrooms which allow a maximum temperature of 40.5 degrees Celsius to ensure the safety of paediatric patients nursed in this area. This is considered essential to prevent serious burns to yourself during your hospital stay.
Meals - Here at The Sydney Private Hospital meals are prepared freshly each day. Meals are served at 7.30pm, 12.30pm and 5.30pm with morning tea, afternoon tea, and supper at approximate times.
Unfortunately there will be times when your food and liquid intake will be restricted because of medical conditions. As soon as your medical condition permits, you will be able to progress to a light diet and subsequently the full menu.
We can also cater for you if you have any special dietary requirements.
In keeping with your health interests and complying with health regulations, hot meals may not be reheated. Therefore, if you are still in the Operating Theatre when the evening meal is delivered, you will be given a suitable meal from the kitchen on your return to the ward.
Housekeeping - Your room will be cleaned daily. Please notify a member of the nursing staff if you have a concern regarding any aspect of the housekeeping service.
Medications - You are required to bring to hospital your usual medications in their original packaging.
All appropriate medications will be ordered by your doctor or anaesthetist, and will be locked away during your stay and dispensed by the Registered Nurse.
Pharmacy - All medications given to you during your stay with us are ordered by your doctor. If these are supplied on prescription or are different to or extra to those that you did not bring with you, then the cost may be included on your account.
Pathology - Laverty, Symbion Pathology provides pathology services to the hospital. Collectors are present at the hospital from 7am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and visit Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Pathology results are available to the doctor at the hospital via the hospital computer link and a copy is also sent to your doctor.
Community patients can also attend the Collection Centre at the hospital – Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm, with an authorised request form from their doctor.
Accounts for pathology services are aggregated during your hospital stay and will be forwarded either to you or directly to your private health fund for processing of Medicare and Private Fund rebates. Pathology account enquiries should be made to the accounts department on 02 9005 7055.
X-Ray - You are required to bring to hospital all X-rays applicable to your admission. Please ensure you take all X-rays home with you at the time of discharge.
Radiology services (routine X-Rays, ultrasound and select CT scans) can be provided by Metropolitan Imaging Services who are located on Level 1 of the hospital. As they are a separate entity to the hospital, they will issue their own account.
Smoking - Being a health care institution we pride ourselves on taking a positive attitude to health and wellness.
In the interest of your health we request all people do not smoke. Smoking has been banned within the hospital by government regulation.
