Dr Peter Catts MB BS FRCS FRACS FACS
Dr Catts is a retired general surgeon who had been in specialist private practice from 1971 to 2001. Dr Catts has an interest in medical politics and a passionate desire to preserve professional independence through private medical practice. He is well known to surgeons who were involved in the dispute, which followed the introduction of Medicare in 1984 when he was Chairman of the NSW Committee of the Australian Association of Surgeons. The breakdown of the public hospital system in NSW led to his study of, and commitment to, the principles of “Total Quality Management” (TQM). Since that time, Dr Catts has been NSW President and Federal President of the Australian Small Business Association. In 1998 he was the Chairman of Fund-Raising for the Australian Doctors’ Fund in NSW. He is currently a Director and Treasurer of the Australian Doctors’ Fund. Also in the past he has been a Board Director of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards and was a member of the Board of Directors of South Western Sydney Area Health Service for ten years until July 1998. Dr Catts led a syndicate of his fellow doctors who took over the ownership, management and redevelopment of Holroyd and The Sydney Private Hospitals and subsequently Longueville Private Hospital and three private hospitals in Melbourne, namely; Essendon, Mountain District and Malvern Private Hospitals. Dr Catts is primarily responsible for the core values and beliefs promoted through the doctor ownership model. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA).
